Are Male Nurse Uniforms Standard Wear for All Medical Professionals?

Male nurse uniformsMale nurse uniforms, the apparel often known as scrubs or as a scrub pair, is a highly efficient and effective piece of clothing. It features a very simple design that’s easy to detect dirt on and which is even easier to clean. It’s very easy to throw in the laundry en masse and rest assured that they will come out thoroughly sanitized. Male nurse uniforms are extremely cheap to buy and to replace which is important as most medical professionals run through scrubs like they’re water. Overall it’s hard to think what would improve on scrubs and make them a better piece of clothing for the medical environment. So why aren’t they more widely worn by other members of the medical community?

Overall scrubs are only really considered compulsory wear for nurses. These nurses might get to pick out their own scrubs and get them in whatever colors and patterns they like, but overall they all need to wear male nurse uniforms that closely resemble each other. On the other hand most other members of a hospital’s staff isn’t required to wear much of anything resembling a uniform. The closest to a uniform that doctors have to wear on a day to day basis is a white coat, but underneath that coat doctor’s are basically allowed to wear whatever they want. The only doctors who need to wear scrubs are surgeons when they’re entering into the operating room and that’s it. The rest of the time they can wear basically whatever they want beneath their clothing. This sounds like a double standard, but is it really?

It’s important to remember a few things about scrubs and medical environments. For starters scrubs are ideal because they are easy to keep clean and free from dirt so that this kind of debris doesn’t further infect or compromise a patient. They were developed for surgery before they were adopted by other staff members. Nurses, in general, are more likely to both come in direct contact with patients and to do the “dirty work” in a hospital. Doctor’s don’t often come into direct contact with patients and never perform any work that’s likely to get them messy and which would necessitate clothing that identifies the fact that they need to clean off. The only doctors who fit that bill are surgeons in the operating room, who are the only doctors who need to wear scrubs.

A scrub pair also has the advantage of acting as an identifying characteristic of a nurse. With a quick glance you can look up at the person in front of you, see that they’re wearing scrubs and assume they’re a nurse. This fast identification is important in the quick and urgent pacing of the hospital, but easy identification is even beneficial in less stressful environments like dental offices. It’s better for medical staff to quickly identify each other and it’s better for patients who can easily understand the rank and responsibilities of the person they’re talking to at any given moment. So while it might not make a lot of sense that male nurse uniforms function differently than other hospital staff clothing, there are reasons behind the system that make a lot of sense.
